NHK's production of TUN-HUANG, from the novel by Inoue Yasushi, was broadcast on National Educational Television in late 1961. The first showing on record is Nov. 24, 1961 on Washington DC's WETA Channel 26. The NET files held by the Library of Congress include a fairly detailed synopsis and credits (the Library also holds a 16mm master copy of the program).

Brian, are you only concerned with commercial TV? If so, this will not come under your criteria for "TV programs," but I remember seeing a bunraku play broadcast on PBS Boston around 1961. It was not an archive film but clearly shot and edited for screen viewing so it might possibly have originated with NHK. It would be worth your while perhaps to check the history of NHK/PBS connexion just to cover educational TV in a footnote. Sumo broadcasts might also have been around in those days in certain areas of the country. Good luck. FB
