The first trailer for Suo Masayuki's Katsuben!, a fictional tale of benshi in the silent era, has been released.

I actually saw it the other week. While there are not a few holes in the story, which relies a bit too much on the mannerism of Suo regulars, it is a fun and entertaining film that in general is not too wrong about the history of the benshi and silent film in Japan. Pure film discourse even makes an appearance! The actors’ benshi performances are quite good, in part due to expert coaching by the benshi Kataoka Ichiro and Sakamoto Raiko, both of whom make appearances in the film.

The film will be released in December in Japan.
