Dear Sue:

Based upon your description, it seems like you have a larva of a Hag Moth
(Phobetron pithecium), also known as the Monkey Slug.  Around where I live,
they are normally found on cherries (Prunus) and oaks (Quercus).  Be
careful, those feathery protrusions have stinging hairs, even after they
fall off before pupation!
