what do Monarch butterfly larvae eat?

Same is true for Southern California, as elsewhere.  There are many species
of milkweeds (family: Asclepiadaceae) in California that monarchs feed on. 
The genus Asclepias which has about 12 to 15 species in CA is particularly
liked by monarchs.
