a popular article in Nature Canada vol. 24, no. 4, 1995 describes the
situation in Ontario and the factors contributing to its extirpation.

but what got things to this point where a couple of major stochastic events
can wipe out the remnants is the usual story of habitat destruction and
change. one area was deliberately planted with millions of pine trees which
of course shaded out the lupine. burgeoning deer population is also
mentioned as a problem with reintroduction
