I regularly remove overwintering black swallowtail chrysalides from the sides
of the containers to facilitate storage and I have never had a problem with
emergences from the detached chrysalides. The most important thing to provide
is a climbing "wall" - screen, fabric or otherwise rough surface for the newly
emerged butterfly to climb. Hang the fabric or screen from the center of the
container - touching the floor - or line the outside walls with fabric. Simply
lay the chrysalis at the bottom of the container. It is not necessary to stand
it up.
