Seen by car along Hwy 29 between Calistoga and Kelseyville (Clear Lake)
Napa and Lake Counties March 11, 12: remp 60 - 65 degrees F. - sunny.
1.? Tortoiseshell (or Anglewing) - going by too fast to confirm
2.Pieris rapae
3.Mourning Cloak Nymphalis antiopa
4. Altho' I suppose it could have been a moth, or skipper, and few by
rather quickly, in the sun it seems to be a small blue with brown orange
wing margines -at first I thought of the Pygmy Blue but I know that's out
of season, as with most other blues but I'm only familiar with the San
Francisco Bay area - this is 100 miles north. Checking "Discovering the
Butterflies of Lassen Volcanic Nat'l Park" (L. Crabtree) I only see
possibley the Dotted Blue, Euphilotes enoptes that could have resemled it -
HOWEVER - again, just too early in the season?
Oh well...
Just thought I'd post what I see flying through the year...
