	Jeff Fengler asked about:

> a leather bound pocket guide (about 3"x6") to butterflies by Holland.

This is _The Butterfly Guide_, A Pocket Manual for the Ready Identification
of the Commoner Species found in the United States and Canada, by W. J.
Holland. With 295 Colored Figures Representing 255 Species and Varieties.
Doubleday, Doran & Co., Inc. Copyright 1915. My copy is dated 1935.

Holland was not the only one of our late 19th century/early 20th
century lepidopterists to produce a popular book in addition to a larger
tome. Samuel Hubbard Scudder (author of the 3-volume set _Butterflies
of the Eastern United States and Canada_) also wrote two popular books:

_Frail Children of the Air, Excursions into the World of Butterflies_,
Houghton, Mifflin and Company, 1895. This book contains 31 of the 76
Excursi in _Butterflies of the Eastern United States and Canada_ (analogous
to the 'Digressions' in Holland's _Butterfly Book_ and _Moth Book__.

_Everyday Butterflies, A Group of Biographies_, Houghton, Mifflin and
Company, 1899. This book gives the life histories for 62 species of
butterflies.

Both these books are worth having, should you come across them.
