Glue

This is off topic but this list includes a range of subscribers who
might deal with old books and maybe with their repair.

The binder of a book I have dated 1893 is split and I want to repair
it.  Rather than using Elmer's glue as I would on a current day book to
repair it, I would like to use the same glue, or family of glue, that
was used to originaly bind this book in 1893.  In lieu of this not being
known or available, a reference to a cellulose based glue might be
okay.  Any recommendations or references would be appreciated.
