MONSANTO EXECUTIVE NAMED AS EPA DEPUTY ADMINISTRATOR

Linda Fisher has been nominated for the second-ranking position at the
Environmental Protection Agency. Fisher most recently served as the chief
of Monsanto's DC lobbying office, but also served at EPA for ten years
before making the switch to private industry. The EPA regulates plants
which have been altered to produce their own pesticides, and some have
voiced concerns about a possible conflict of interest regarding Fisher's
nomination. Monsanto is a leading developer of biotech foods. If
approved, Fisher would be the top managerial and policy assistant to
Christie Todd Whitman, the EPA's Administrator.
