Poanes aaroni---Aaron's Skipper flying in South Jersey

My miss-spelling of Poanes (as Poanese) does NOT constitute a taxonomic
revision, but miss-spellings have figured prominently in past taxonomic
issues. In a chapter I wrote on shorebird taxonomy we used the spelling
"ocrophus" for the Green Sandpiper (Tringa ocrophus), which is the
original Linnaean spelling and was an obvious miss-spelling for
"ochropus" (perhaps meaning green-legged) which was a spelling already
in use and was presumably what Linnaeus intended.
In our footnote we noted that "modern usage shows a strong preference
for ochropus...."
Indeed, for over a hundred years almost all books had spelled it
ochropus. I'm pretty sure we were wrong in sticking with the original
Linnaean spelling.
In another example, the issue of a miss-print as opposed to a
miss-spelling came up, where the first appearance of the name was
spelled one way, and later in the same text it was spelled consistently
another way. In that case, the initial appearance was assumed to be a
miss-print (a typo) as opposed to a miss-spelling (an error in
knowledge).
What do some of the code afficionados have to contribute to those
examples.
