MCDOUGAL CENTER EVENTS THIS WEEK

  * 8TH ANNUAL WINTER BALL / (02-23-2008 9:00 PM - 2:00 AM)/
The Fellows and Staff of Grad Student Life @ the McDougal Center are
pleased to bring you the 8th Annual McDougal Winter Ball at the New
Haven Lawn Club on Saturday February 23rd, 2008 from 9pm-2am! In the
lovely Grand Ballroom, the rocking Steve Atwood band will be playing
rock hits, followed by our favorite DJ Awesome playing contemporary
dance music from 11:30pm- 2am. This year will again feature a
choco-licious dessert reception at 10pm, with all kinds of sweets and
cakes, included in the ticket price. There will be a Cash Bar, and
complimentary coffee and water available. All graduate and
professional students, postdoctoral fellows, faculty and staff and
their spouses, partners and guests are welcome to attend. Dressy or
cocktail attire, or national dress costume, is suggested, but not
required. Come with a group of friends or bring your significant
other. Dates are welcome, but not required and we expect to have many
singles at the ball, so bring your friends and make some new ones. 
BALL TICKET SALES: Advance tickets are $15 until 6pm on Friday
February 22nd at the McDougal Center Box office, HGS 123, 320 York
Street, Mon-Fri from 10 AM - 5:00 PM. Extended box office hours til
7pm Feb 20 & 21. Cash or check, made out to Yale University,
accepted. Tickets are $20 at the door on February 23rd at the Lawn
Club, if supplies allow, so purchase your tix early! To Pre-order

  * CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: OLYMPIACOS VS CHELSEA / (02-19-2008 2:45 PM)/
Join other graduate students in watching Olympiacos take on Chelsea
on the projector screen!!!  The game will begin at 2:45 PM and will
be shown at the International Center; we will have free soft drinks
and a variety of snacks.  A $2 donation is requested to offset the
costs.  This is done in collaboration with OISS.

  * TALENT TUESDAY / (02-19-2008 7:00 PM)/
Every Tuesday night at 7PM in the HGS Common Room, Grad Students
convene to hang out and perform for each other at an open mic event
called "Talent Tuesdays". WE WANT YOU to showcase your talent. We're
looking for people from all departments to read essays or poetry,
sing, play music, act, be funny, dance, perform acrobatics. . .

if you have a hidden or not-so-hidden talent that you would like
share with the grad school community, and come support your fellow
grad students on Tuesday's at 7 in the HGS Common Room! The Blue Dog
Cafe is always open for refreshments.

  * PEABODY VOUCHERS / (  )/
We are offering Peabody Museum vouchers for children. Vouchers ($5
value) for up to three children can be picked up at the McDougal Box
Office at the McDougal Center between nine and five.  You may want to
take advantage of the upcoming vacation Dino Days at the museum. 
Vouchers will be given out on a first come, first serve basis.

  * WEEKLY PLAYGROUPS / (  )/
There are weekly playgroups on Monday from 4-6 pm, and on Wednesdays
from 10-12 am, both in B48-50 McDougal Family Play room. G&P
Students, spouses, caregivers with children welcome. Free kids snacks
and coffee/tea coupons for adults.

MCDOUGAL FELLOWS' TIPS OF THE WEEK

  * MARKUS AND MEISHA'S INTERNATIONAL TIP OF THE WEEK
Are you an international student who wants to work in the US over the
summer?  Having a US student visas makes you eligible to apply for up
to one year of "Optional Practical Training" (OPT) which can be used
all at once or in smaller portions.  Contact Sarah Henderson from the
OISS to attend an OPT information session:  sarah.henderson at yale.edu.

  * AMY'S ARTS AND CULTURE TIP OF THE WEEK
Did you know that the Arts team is planning events like a Bonsai
workshop, a Grad Gallery, or an art-related scavenger hunt?  You
would if you received our Arts & Culture e-newsletter! Email

up!

  * PATRICIA'S PUBLIC SERVICE TIP OF THE WEEK
GOOD magazine, ?the magazine for people who ?give a damn?? - donates
100% of your $20 subscription fee to the charity of your choice. 
They?ve already raised about $700,000.  The magazine has articles
about people around the world who innovate to make change for good.

  * TOM'S ARTS AND CULTURE TIP OF THE WEEK
Before you hit the Winter Ball, head to Woolsey Hall at 8PM on
Saturday and hear the Yale Symphony Orchestra perform the famous
"Carmina Burana", by Carl Orff with full chorus and orchestra.  This
piece is enjoyed by all generations, and you'll already be dressed
perfectly!

  * GINA'S PUBLIC TIP OF THE WEEK
It's easy to get involved in the community, and lots of organizations
would like your help! The Ronald McDonald House (at George and Dwight)
needs multilingual volunteers and the Community Soup Kitchen (located
right across from the Yale Bookstore) is looking for lunchtime
servers. For more information, go to the United Way Volunteer Link
website (http://www.volunteersolutions.org/uwgnh/volunteer/) and
search for volunteer opportunities in the 06511 zip code. The results
will include these two positions, as well as many others!

  * SUSAN'S KIDS AND FAMILY TIP OF THE WEEK
Since Vacation Week is upon us and some people were asking about what
to do with their kids, I think it's worthwhile to repeat myself. For
international grad parents or those new to Connecticut or even those
who have been living here, I highly recommend "Fun with the Family in
Connecticut" by Doe Boyle, The Globe Pequot Press:  Guilford, CT.  It
has "hundred of ideas for day trips with kids."  If you have toddlers
or preschoolers, I highly recommend visiting some of the area's
excellent children's museums.  You can relax and sip cappuccino while
your kid-let is entertained for hours! Connecticut is not a very large
state, so there are many activities accessible by public
transportation or within an hour's drive of New Haven.

The Peabody has special events all this week to celebrate and educate
about our favorite extinct friends, dinosaurs. No matter what your
age, there is something for you this week. It is also a great week to
bring a child, mentee or relative to the Peabody. Yale students, staff

the McDougal Center has free kids vouchers available this month, too.

This panel, which Jon Butler, Dean of the Graduate School, will
chair, will address "The Sociology of Hate" and will take place on

joined on the panel by Professors Alondra Nelson, Joanne Meyerowitz,

  * GETTING YOUR PAPER PUBLISHED AS HUMANITIES GRADUATE STUDENT: A

Come join us on Wednesday, Feb. 27th, 5-7:30 pm, HGS 119 to hear
advice on how to get your work published in academic journals while
you are in graduate school from a faculty panel of prolific authors
and journal editors. The panel will include faculty members from
History, Religious Studies, History of Art and English. All graduate
students in the Humanities are invited to learn how to navigate the

  * THE MOST FAMOUS MAN IN AMERICA:  DISCUSSION WITH PULITZER PRIZE

THE MOST FAMOUS MAN IN AMERICA is coming to Yale on Thursday,
February 28, 2008.  Debby Applegate, Yale Ph.D.alumna and
pulitzer-prize winning author of THE MOST FAMOUS MAN IN AMERICA, will
be speaking in the McDougal Center Common Room from 4:30 - 5:30. 
Reception with food and drink follows.  Also, limited seating is
available for dinner with Ms. Applegate following the reception.

 Tickets for the dinner are $5.

  * IM LEAGUE OFFICIALS AND SOCCER REFEREES WANTED / (02-29-2008 4:00
PM)/
The Grad/Pro Intramurals (IM) leagues of softball and soccer are
looking for commissioners to oversee the spring season. 
Commissioners are paid an hourly wage (approx. $12/hour for about 6
hours per day) to be out at the IM fields on the weekends to settle
any disputes on behalf of the gym.  The IM soccer league is also
looking for officials for the games.  The officials will get paid
approx. $25 per game they officiate.  To apply, please email Carlos

  * IM SOCCER EARLY REGISTRATION / (02-29-2008 4:00 PM)/
IM Soccer Registration for the spring season will be done earlier
than posted on the webpage.  For those people who are interested in
playing, registration for the soccer season is due Friday, 2/29 by
4pm.  Registration forms need to be in the office by that point in

  * GRAD NIGHT AT CT ROCK GYM CLIMBING CENTER / (03-02-2008 5:00 -

Join other grad students for a rock climbing night on Sunday night at
5:00-7:00 PM at CT Rock Gym (check out their website
http://www.ctrockgym.com).  Students from all levels are welcome!
Price for entrance is $20 which includes gear.  Please pay in advance
at McDougal Office (space is limited).  We are also looking for 2-3
volunteers to instruct / train students for this event.  If

Come give blood and get a free cup of coffee (plus the knowledge that
you?ve done something good!).  If you don?t want to or can?t give
blood, volunteer to help out for an hour to give out snacks or
check-in appointments. Donor walk-ins are welcome, but if you don?t

  * NYC OPERA:  CANDIDE / (04-12-2008 )/
TICKETS on sale NOW at the McDougal Box office for the Saturday,
April 12 performance of CANDIDE at the New York City Opera.  Order
soon, there are a limited number of seats available.  Come see
CANDIDE, the best of all possible operas in the best of all possible
theaters in the best of all possible cities in the best of all
possible worlds. Leonard Bernstein's CANDIDE is playing for a limited
time at the NYC Opera in Lincoln Center. Tickets available in 123 HGS

  * RUGBY PLAYERS WANTED
The Yale Graduate Rugby Football Club is currently looking for new
recruits. No experience is necessary and any graduate/professional
student, faculty, or staff is welcome to join. We do not currently
have a women's team as part of our club, but would love to join
forces with anyone interested in starting a women's team. Please
