Research Museum Collection Manager, University Herbarium

 

The University of Michigan Herbarium is searching for a Research Museum
Collection Manager.  This individual will provide curatorial management
of plant and fungal collections at the University of Michigan Herbarium
and oversee and help develop the Herbarium databases and participate in
bioinformatics initiatives.  

 

Reporting to the Director of the Herbarium, specific duties include
overseeing existing databases at the Herbarium and assisting in further
developing database resources, especially making them web-accessible;
helping to facilitate community data standards and assisting in digital
imaging initiatives; in conjunction with two other collection managers,
assist in processing loans, gifts, and exchanges of specimens from other
institutions and individuals, including unpacking, record keeping,
database updating, and refiling as appropriate; assisting
faculty/curators with preparation of grant proposals to enhance
collections, including databasing proposals, and with preparing labels
for collections; assisting visitors who come to use the collections and
train or supervise student temporary workers and/or volunteers; and
participating in special projects required for proper curation of the
collections, including redistribution of collections, verification of
type specimens, and any associated library work to upgrade the
collections. 



Qualifications:  Applicants should have a Bachelor's degree in plant
biology or related field, with experience in plant systematics,
herbarium practices, or equivalent database experience; a Masters degree
in plant systematic and experience in working with plant or natural
history collections is desired.  Knowledge of and experience using
current computer software applications (particularly Access, also Excel
and other routine applications) and the ability to learn new
applications; experience with XML, SQL databases or specialized database
applications such as Specify is desired.
