Subject: [ACUMG-L] Task Force on University Collections

Dear ACUMG-L'ers;

Addressing head-on the challenges posed to the collections in our care by the leadership of? a small?number of the nation's universities and colleges?continues to be a priority of the ACUMG Board.? In collaboration with the AAM, CAA, AAMD, and Kress Foundation, the ACUMG has?helped organize?a Task Force to address the disturbing trend of selling collections from academic museums as a short-sighted response to the current economic downturn.?

Our goal is to confront and challenge such decisions, not only as they arise, but also systemically.???You will be pleased to know that the?Task Force is populated by leaders in the aforementioned associations: Ford Bell, Julie Hart and Eileen Goldspiel (AAM), Michael Comforti,?Janet Landay, Dan Monroe?(AAMD), Linda Downs (CAA), Max Marmor (Kress Foundation), Lyndel King (UMAC), and Bill Eiland, Tom Woodward,?and myself?representing ACUMG.?

As we move forward on several fronts, we will seek your?help and recommendations.? Following?the next meeting of the Task Force in mid-June, we will be posting a petition for your signature.? In brief, it will be a statement--addressed to university and college trustees and presidents--about the integral role of academic museums to the mission of the university.? We intend to publish this statement with the help of the Kress Foundation in The Chronicle of Higher Education and post it on-line for your and others signatures.?

In the meantime, if you haven't, take a look at?the ACUMG's?activities in the press, to date, at http://www.acumg.org/press.html?.

Cordially,

David Robertson, President, ACUMG
