[Nhcoll-l] Inquiry about polycarbonate pails and glass pickle jars for fluid-preserved specimens

We use HDPE wide mouth screw lid containers; these are UN approved,
airtight and made from food grade material (which should exclude at
least too much softeners leaking into the fluid). We also use these
drums in the field & for returning of formalin fixed fishes in the
checked luggage; never had any problems, even under harsh field
conditions (I personally use the same 3 drums I bought back at the end
of the 1990ies). Especially the smaller drums easily fit into a suitcase
or aluminium case. Lids have a massive gasket inside.

The Manufacturer is CurTec, Netherlands:
https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__www.curtec.com_en_products_drums_wide-2Dneck-2Ddrums&d=AwID-g&c=-dg2m7zWuuDZ0MUcV7Sdqw&r=CLFZJ3fvGSmDp7xK1dNZfh6uGV_h-8NVlo3fXNoRNzI&m=1JaDEImzK_7UHpEbZUgSETxp_zZxi0sbRq5UBD9Jw28&s=UwsQgq4p6tVZ-Lk6v7tKmj_g9cfEGRwV8aPPuYgsuKc&e=

They do have a USA branch, CurTec USA Inc., but apparently offer no
separate website. Containers are available from US based resellers, I
guess, might be worth to check outdoor equipment stores as well (these
drums a used a lot for kayaking, as they are watertight, too).

Several European Collections (Berlin, Stuttgart, Cardiff, Paris, Munich)
are using those containers in the fluid collections for considerable
time now, without any issues or problems. Only disadvantage: they are
not clear, which is a handicap for monitoring.

All the best
Dirk
